Cellas of Healthcare and Medicine

with Faith Leung

The purpose of this study was to discover how major scientific breakthroughs and historical events shape the typology of cellas and healthcare spaces. Being able to find correlations between the medical advancements and hospital architecture can help increase the understanding on how and why the typology of healthcare spaces have evolution throughout history, and how with the medical knowledge we have now, we can ultimately make predictions on the future development of these spaces.

The first phase of research included gathering secondary research regarding the history of medicine and healthcare spaces. Starting from Ancient Greece all the way to the contemporary period. This part of the study was followed by collecting several case studies from the different periods of time to help understand the overall development of healthcare spaces.

Through comparative analysis, the selected case studies are fleshed out in order to look more into the details of the design of the space and examine their typologies. Based on the analysis of the multiple sources of research collected from these case studies, it becomes easier to find the connections between the typology of healthcare spaces and the timeline of historical event and scientific breakthroughs.
